Named after original developers, Europay, MasterCard, Visa or EMV chip technology is becoming   global standard for credit and debit payments.  EMV enable cards contain a tiny computer chip that communicates with EMV enable payment terminals and provides an additional level of encrypted security to protect transaction information.

 EMV HISTORY
. Used in Europe since 1992, dramatically decreasing card present fraud

 ROLLOUT
. In April of 2013 Visa and MasterCard required payment processors to be able to accept EMV data

. On 10/1/15, Visa/MasterCard mandate goes into effect requiring EMV adoption by merchants

. After 10/1/15, Merchants without EMV capability are at risk of being held liable for card present fraud

 ADDITIONAL IMPACT
. As mandate approaches, equipment cost is likely to rise as demand for EMV capable equipment increases
